The Department of Society and Conservation (SoCon) is an interdisciplinary social science department dedicated to scholarly engagement and social science education that addresses our most pressing human-environment challenges. We value multiple approaches to social science inquiry and embrace interdisciplinary collaboration. SoCon faculty have expertise in human dimensions of natural resources, environmental and public lands policy, recreation and tourism, environmental governance, sustainable communities and livelihoods, wildland and protected area management, international conservation and development, political ecology, social-ecological systems, human-wildlife interactions, environmental justice, environmental and natural resource planning, private lands conservation, and resilience and transformation. Our faculty draw from a broad range of disciplines, including psychology, sociology, geography, political science, philosophy, and anthropology. We work at local to global scales, connecting science and practice to engage a range of decision-makers and communities.
