Jacob Baynham

Baynham has spent the past seven years reporting both internationally and domestically for Newsweek, Men's Journal, the San Francisco Chronicle,Outside, Esquire, The Flyfish Journal and other publications. Whatever he's writing about, whether it's in New Delhi or New Jersey, Baynham enjoys telling deeply human stories about people overcoming obstacles, indulging their passions or quietly living out their lives in extraordinary ways. An open mind and an inquisitive spirit have led him to stories about a national bird-watching competition, a cannibal convict in Tasmania and the (surprisingly rich) history of the female condom.

Baynham spent five years of his childhood in India, where he developed a love for languages and travel. After graduating from UM, he spent a year freelancing in Asia. He started in Hong Kong and worked his way west through Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, India and Afghanistan. In 2008, he received a grant from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting to report from Myanmar. Later, he was invited to participate in an International Center for Journalism conference on Iran. 

More recently, Baynham spent three years in Cincinnati working for Xavier University and writing for local and national publications. He returned to Montana in 2012 and now lives with his wife on Flathead Lake. He continues to report locally and internationally. In 2013, he reported on the Soviet Union's former nuclear test site in Kazakhstan with a group of journalists from the International Reporting Project. When he's not writing or teaching, Baynham enjoys spending time in the mountains, fly fishing, hunting or hiking.
