Katharina Werner

Katharina Werner (KAT) has worked in the social services field for over 15 years and has extensive experience with women, men, and children impacted by primary and secondary trauma, homelessness, domestic and sexual violence, commercial sexual exploitation, and human trafficking. Through her direct service and program management experience, Kat was able to build both expertise in and a passion for social policy and civic engagement. Kat served on the National Social Work Voter Mobilization Campaign, which strives to integrate nonpartisan voter registration and engagement into social work education. She currently serves as a board member with the North American Network of Field Educators and Directors (NANFED) and is co-chairing the Northwest Field Education Consortium to ensure field education faculty members can network and receive support in their roles.

In addition to her experience in the United States, Kat—herself an immigrant—has also had the opportunity to address social justice issues on a global level, working in Germany, India, and parts of Southeast Asia. She developed and successfully leads a biannual study abroad course to Berlin, Germany, examining the differences in German and American approaches to refugee resettlement policies and services. Kat is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and runs a very small private practice to keep her clinical and direct practice skills sharp. She joined the University of Montana School of Social Work in 2016, first as an adjunct instructor and then as the Assistant Director of Field Education supporting BSW students with their practicum experience. In 2019, she stepped into the role of Director of Field Education—a job she loves wholeheartedly because it allows her to help shape the future generation of social workers.
