Abstract

A computational model of hummingbird forward flight at speed 8 m/s is constructed from highspeed videos to study the aerodynamics of the flapping wing. The kinematic parameters were analyzed, which include the effective angle of attack and the chord angle. The reconstructed model was then used for a simple blade-elementmodel to study the lift and thrust generated by different sections of the wing. It was found that the distal section is responsible for thrust production while both distal and proximal sections contributed to lift production.
