Bridging contexts: Developing a virtual intercultural exchange through online conversations

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

This semester-long activity prescribes a series of videoconference conversations between students residing in locations constricted from in-person exchange based on external factors. In our case, online conversations between students in the U.S. and in Palestine were set up as a required element of a communication studies class in each location. The goals and structure of a virtual intercultural exchange built around bridging sociopolitical barriers to connection are outlined, and reflections from both instructors and students are included to offer insight into the utility and efficacy of this activity. Courses: Appropriate for any communication courses with the goal of expanding cultural perspective-taking and competence, such as courses on conflict, family, media, organizations, health, or the environment. Objectives: Students will (a) share and elicit perspectives skillfully across diverse cultural contexts, (b) apply relevant communication concepts from their courses into conversation, and (c) engage in reflection of communication from self and others to increase communication efficacy.
