Abstract

In the past, leadership has not been a commonly used construct in research on children’s group work. Students who assist others are o en called helpers or peer-tutors (Webb & Palincsar, 1996) or simply more advanced students. In this chapter we will make the argument that the leadership construct can be an important addition to the list of constructs for understanding the dynamics of cooperative groups. It describes a type of dynamic not addressed by other constructs and focuses on important issues not usually considered in research on classroom learning and instruction.
