Abstract

This chapter serves as a general introduction to the halogen bond. It begins with a brief summary of halogens and the fundamentals of halogen bonding including its history, definition, observation, and assessment. To provide context to the ensuing chapters, this introduction also includes a succinct survey of halogen bonding in the fields of solid-state, computation, and materials chemistry. This primer is not meant to be comprehensive, but rather is constructed as a low barrier entry to understanding the burgeoning halogen bond field.
