Abstract

Compact, quasipoloidally symmetric stellarators with high magnetohydrodynamics stability β limits and good neoclassical confinement were developed. A self-consistent bootstrap current was found to be responsible for the production of the rotational transform in these hybrid configurations. The bootstrap current was found to be consistent with the required equilibrium current and was only a small fraction of that in an equivalent tokamak. Results showed that the neoclassical confinement improves with increasing β.
