Abstract
A culture of anti-democratic violence existed on both political extremes in Italy, and any attempt to understand the problem of contemporary Italian terrorism must begin with a historical examination of the ideas and values that motivated the terrorists. This is a conclusion supported by the autobiographical literature of Italian terrorists on the left and right. The author analyzes representative samples of these writings.
