Abstract

The purpose of this article is to provide an overview on the lung macrophage, its role in the regulation of lung immunity, its response to toxic exposures and consequences to the host. These topics are extensive and it would be possible to dedicate an entire volume to these issues. In addition, there is much that we do not know about the regulation of the macrophage response to toxic exposures and the role of the macrophage in lung injury. The first portion of this article will describe the normal structure and functions of the macrophage in the lung and the second portion will address macrophage responses to xenobiotic exposures.
