Abstract

The effect of viscosity on the rate constant for the dissociation of an enzyme-ligand complex has been calculated from a microscopic theory. Using the Kubo representation for the rate constant and the second quantization formalism a Stokes-Einstein-Debye expression is obtained. A microscopic expression for the viscosity is derived. The equation for the microviscosity shows how important information on the enzyme-ligand complex can be obtained from studies on the viscosity dependence of the dissociation rate constant.
