Abstract

We present a description of a reduction procedure for a model of glutamate transport in a synaptic cleft in the presence of a finite number of receptors and transporters with different kinetics properties. Under certain conditions a system of equations for glutamate, receptors and transporters concentrations can be substituted by a single equation for glutamate with effective diffusion and modified kinetics term. The results of model reduction are illustrated with an example showing good agreement between the behavior of the original model and the reduced model.
