Abstract
Studies examining gender inequality and crime have tended to explore the relationship between female victimization and crime. However, feminist theories provide an explanation for gender inequality impacting all criminal victimization, not just female victimization. The current analysis will uses the ameliorative and the backlash hypothesis to examine the relationship gender inequality and homicide in 59 countries. The analysis uses a gender inequality index but also breaks the index down to single variables to examine the complex relationship between gender inequality and homicide. The findings are mixed and support both the ameliorative hypothesis and the backlash hypothesis.
