Supporting Young Children in the Aftermath of Wildfires: Implications, Coping, and Classroom Practices

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Each year, wildfires burn millions of acres globally, and their intensity and frequency are expected to rise steadily over the coming century. These fires pose numerous immediate and long-term risks to the physical, social, emotional, and mental health of young children. Unfortunately, children’s needs after natural disasters are often understudied and underserved. This chapter will explore the impact of wildfires on children, highlight ongoing research to improve our understanding of their needs after a fire, and provide strategies for professionals to offer support in the aftermath.
